What type of music do you play?

The band plays a wide stylistic variety of upbeat dance music, and of course we also include romantic ballads so couples can snuggle up! To see specific examples of the songs we perform, have a look at our songlist. Our goal is to always provide music that is fun, popular and entertaining. The one thing you are assured of when you hire the Dave Murphy Band is a dancefloor that is packed for the entire evening.

The ages of our guests will vary considerably. Can you keep everyone happy?

Absolutely. We pride ourselves in being able to please everyone from the youngest cousin to the eldest grandparent. The band specializes in performing tried and true songs that appeal across generational lines. In the first set in particular, the band always includes lots of retro swing numbers, beautiful ballads and fifties classics that everyone loves to make sure our older guests are comfortable and enjoying the music. As the party continues the band adds more and more modern music in the mix, while continuing with a wide variety to insure that everyone is having fun.

Can I decide what type of music will be played during my reception?

Yes. If see some songs from our songlist that you would like to hear, let us know. Our desire is always to give you exactly what you want. Otherwise, you can rely on Dave’s experience to know exactly what song will work at the right moment.

top

Will the band learn our special song?

Yes. If you have picked a song for your first dance we would be more than happy to learn it. If you’re still trying to decide on a special song, have a look at our list of first dance suggestions, which contains a list of popular songs other couples have previously asked the band to perform. Since Dave is our lead vocalist, there is the very rare song (eg. Mariah Carey!) that the band may not do great justice to. But fear not... you always have the option of playing your song on a CD, and then have the band kick in immediately afterwards.

top

Will the band be too loud?

Never. We always strongly encourage our guests to let us know what volume they would like once we start performing, but no one ever seems to say anything! We strongly believe that our music should never overwhelm your guests, and we always strive to attain a volume that is just right for dancing on the dancefloor, and just right for conversation away from the dancefloor.

top

Will the band’s set up or sound check disturb my guests?

No. The band always arrives 90 minutes before your reception begins so that our set up and soundcheck is totally completed before the first guest arrives.

top

How long does the band typically perform?

Our prices are always based on a standard engagement of 4 hours, although an extended engagement or overtime can always be arranged if the client wishes. Otherwise, the band performs three hour-long sets, which is even more music than a typical nightclub or concert performance.

top

How many breaks do you take?

Under normal circumstances the band takes two half-hour breaks during the entire evening.

top

What happens when the band takes a break? I don’t want my party to stop.

The band has developed its own dance CD which is played during breaks. This mix of disco classics has proved to be so popular that the dancefloor remains just as packed as when the band performs!

Should we also hire a DJ?

When you hire the Dave Murphy Band you get the best of both worlds: great live music, great DJ dance music, and appropriate background music for all other portions of your special evening. During dinner Dave provides a continuous mix of beautiful light background music. There is always a CD player and a tape deck at the client’s disposal, so if there is any music you would specifically like to play--including your own background music, dance music, or even specialty ethnic music--you are always completely welcome to use our system.

top

Can I use your P.A. system for announcements, presentations, and toasts?

Yes. All you have to do is make sure the spot where you’ll be making speeches is in the general vicinity of the stage and you’re all set to go. Many venues do provide their own public speaking system, but if their system is inadequate or nonexistent, you know you are covered with the Dave Murphy Band. Please also keep in mind that Dave is happy to make any announcements for you during the course of your event, should you wish.

top

Is the band experienced?

Very. Since 1993 the band has performed over 2000 times, including countless weddings, dances, parties and other special events. To have a look at a partial list of the many venues the band has performed at, click here. Dave’s band is a set lineup, so you are getting the incredible tightness, precision and expertise that comes from four to six performances every week.

top

How many musicians are in the band?

Most clients always opt for the five-piece version of the band, which consists of keyboards, guitar, bass, drums and saxophone. In addition to their fabulous musicianship, all members of the band sing, making the group’s sound seem even bigger. For clients hoping to save a little extra money, there is always the option of opting for a four-piece lineup by leaving out the sax player.

top

What are the advantages of hiring a live band?

There’s nothing like live music! While events with DJs can sometimes be sterile and impersonal, a great live band adds a human touch, creates excitement, and leaves your guests with incredible memories that will make your event stand out.

top

How will the band dress?

The band dresses in upscale jackets and pants for all special events unless instructed otherwise.

top

How can we hear you play?

With the rarest of exceptions, the band is performing live every single week. Have a look at the band’s schedule to find out when they will be performing near you. It is highly recommended that you consult with Dave at (905) 845-7444 to make sure the band will be playing the sort of music you are planning for your event on the night you see them perform. The band plays radically different music from club to club, depending on the audience, so be sure that Dave lets you know which club most closely matches your own particular needs. If you do make it out to one of our shows, be sure to introduce yourself!

top

Do I need to personally meet with the band leader?

There is never a need to meet in person until your special day. All arrangements can be made by phone and mail, and also by fax and email if you happen to have them. If you make it out to one of our live shows, please say hi, because of course we would love to meet you!

top

How far in advance do we need to book?

At the clubs the band is typically booked about three months ahead of time, although even in this short time frame dates can sometimes be rescheduled for clients with special events. Typically the band is fairly open six months ahead of time, and it is very rare we book more than a year in advance. Still, many special events, particularly weddings, tend to be very popular at certain times of year, so it is wise to book ahead as early as possible once you have decided on the Dave Murphy Band. Once you have given verbal confirmation over the phone, the date will be “locked in” for you. No one else will be able to have your date under any circumstances, and you will have the peace of mind in knowing you have the best band possible reserved for your event.

How much does it cost?

The band is competitively priced, but the exact cost depends on a variety of factors such as date, location and other variables. Call Dave anytime at (905) 845-7444 to get an exact price over the phone.
